The article focuses on a course of instruction in Methods-Time Measurement (MTM) at the Wombwell premises of Layezee Beds, part of the Silentnight group of companies. John Berry, Industrial Engineer for the Wombwell site explained that his company had decided to adopt cellular-working as a new discipline, and that the decision had been taken to use MTM 2 in order to establish methods and times that would show a consistency and fairness of approach. With the advent of triennial testing by the British MTM Association, companies and managers will be able to assure themselves of the integrity of any study work for them. Responsible organisations use the quantitative technique of rating-clinics to determine the accuracy of subjective assessment, so it would seem very much in order to test the ability of analysts applying MTM, a process that can only engender confidence in determined values by managers and workforce alike. The application of MTM will also encourage a consistency between analysts and areas of application, since the data, by its nature is predetermined, and free from the necessity to impose any concept of performance upon the task, a process that by its nature leads to inconsistency and therefore lack of confidence in the outcome.
