ABSTRACT
The article comments on American politics and government. John Edwards' decision this week to become the first pro-war presidential candidate to oppose the administration's $87 billion request for Afghanistan and Iraq is shameful. He cites three substantive reasons to explain his opposition to the budget request. But he hasn't explained why exactly the administration's bill does not represent a "credible plan". Hinging U.S. aid on a major influx of foreign money is a prescription for consigning Iraq to chaos. The responsible thing for Edwards to do would be to put forward an amendment that highlights the Bush plan's deficiencies and make a stand, however hopeless, on the Senate floor. Kudos to George F. Will for being an island of intellectual honesty in a sea of GOP spin. Edwards insists he is not in this latter camp. He(Edwards) says he(Edwards) supports the troops, he(Edwards) supports the reconstruction of Iraq, and he(Edwards) defends his pro-war vote.
