Structure and growth of monoclinic Mo[sub 2]S[sub 3] nanorods

We report the synthesis of sulfide nanostructures with trivalent molybdenum, i.e., crystalline Mo[sub 2]S[sub 3] nanorods via a solid-gas reaction between porous Al[sub 2]O[sub 3] impregnated with MoO[sub 3] and H[sub 2]S gas. We show that the introduction of additional 8% H[sub 2] gas results in MoS[sub 2] nanotubes of the same size. A growth model is proposed for the formation of Mo[sub 2]S[sub 3] nanorods, and the effect of H[sub 2] is discussed and demonstrated. © 2003 American Institute of Physics.
