ABSTRACT
This article addresses a critical deficiency in the American prison system - that is the lack of comprehensive parenting programs for incarcerated males. The article gives a brief overview of the literature which provides a strong rationale for offering parenting classes to incarcerated fathers. The focus here is a description of a unique program developed in Delaware in which graduate students use their internship to facilitate parenting programs. The program is now in its third year of foundation funding. To date, program outcomes have been encouraging and have suggested strategies for enhancing program effectiveness in the future. The innovation of the Delaware project is that it provides a viable service to the male prison population as well as training for graduate students. Due to grant funding, this program is being offered cost-free to the Department of Correction and the grantee agency, Delaware State University. Essentially, this program as designed could serve as a model for other state systems that need parenting courses for their incarcerated male population.
