ABSTRACT

The article looks at some animal species that are endangered and discusses how animals and plants become endangered. When an animal species begins to die out, the animal is said to be endangered or threatened. Throughout the world today, 1,932 species of animals are endangered or threatened, according to the National Wildlife Federation. The leatherback sea turtle is the largest living turtle in the world. These turtles are facing extinction. As few as 1,000 giant pandas remain in the mountains of southwest China. Animals are endangered when the climate of their habitat changes in a major way. Sometimes people destroy habitats where animals live. Bison or buffalo once ranged over the entire Great Plains of the United States, but they were hunted almost to extinction in the 19th century.
