ABSTRACT
The profession of arborist-climber was ranked by the magazine Forbes in the US as the second most dangerous occupation after the fishermen. This communication is based on the compromises implemented by the operators, according to their experience, in order to preserve their health and to provide security, so as to reach performance. As time goes by, the operators' field of action widens, enabling them to make their choices more efficient. The compromises made by the operators differ, depending on their experience and their challenges, in terms of security and performance in each of the working situations observed. As we will see, for achieving performance, the safety challenges for the beginner are differents from those of the expert. Skills and experience keep on the expert in a different vision of the danger as the beginner, as already shown in others studies of differents professionnal areas. At last, based on performance-criteria identified in this arborist-climber team, contrast performance and health seems less relevant, as proposed in some ergonomics models, as consider health as one of the criteria for achieving performance.
