ABSTRACT
The Landschaftsbibliothek in Aurich is one of the smallest scientific libraries in Lower Saxony, looking back on four hundred years of tradition. It originated in about 1600 as the East Frisian estates Administrators' reference library. After the loss of the East Frisian Prince's library in the year 1746, it keeps up the tradition of public book ownership in the far north west of Germany to this day. Since the 19th century and along with the gradual integration of the East Frisian Landschaft into a government association for culture, science and education, the primarily law oriented reference library changed into a common scientific library focusing mainly on history. Only in 1965 - 50 years ago - the library of the East Frisian Landschaft moved into a building of its own, in 1995, - 20 years ago - it moved into a timelessly modern new building connected with the old one which was awarded several prizes. In June 2015, the Chamber of Architects of Lower Saxony emphasized the architectonic value of the building again in a vote when the Landschaftsbibliothek received the greatest consent among twenty award-winning objects. The continuation of the Landschaftsbibliothek is guaranteed by the State of Lower Saxony, it is a GBV (Common Library Network) member and offers all the facilities of a modern library.
