ABSTRACT
This article deals with the issue of the offering of sex education in public high schools in the U.S. Proponents of sex education argue that such instruction provides information that teenagers need to help prevent the consequences of sexual activity. A survey of high school principals found that 36 percent of public high schools in the country offer a course in sex education. The need for a course in human reproduction and human sexuality is reflected by the statistics on teenage pregnancy, teenage abortions, and the use of contraceptives among adolescents. Meanwhile an evaluation of the revised Family Living/Sex Education Curriculum in the New York City school system provided an opportunity to assess the relevance of the course and its strengths and weaknesses.
