Focuses on an account of the expenditure of the U.S. armed forces estimated by the U.S. General Accounting Office. Increase in the cost of 77 weapon systems as compared to the cost estimates at the end of the fiscal year 1971; Cost overrun reported by the military for the year 1971; Factors attributing to the cost overrun problem faced by the U.S. military budget; Threat for the security and life of American soldiers due to development of unreliable and difficult to maintain; Clarification on the issue from the Pentagon by means of a 193-page reports released by the Secretary of Defense; Views expressed by the Pentagon critics that if the military is so eager to cut weapons to keep costs down and appearances up, then may be the original request for those weapons was invalid.
