Many people are back from Johannesburg, South Africa, after having attended the 85th birthday celebration of former President Nelson Mandela, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate who in 1994 became president of South Africa after winning the nation's first all-race election, after the fall of apartheid. One highlight of the celebration was when a very moving letter of congratulations, sent by the great-granddaughter of Hendrik Verwoerd, the late South African politician, was read. Frank Thomas, who for 17 years served as president and CEO of the Ford Foundation, was responsible for all of the foundation's programs, operations and investment activities.
