The article examines the market viability of retail trade in Saint Louis, Missouri as of August 1990. A building boom altered its shopping landscape, expanded shopping mall space and brought sophisticated retailing back to downtown Saint Louis with successful urban developments. With population growth expected to slow in the early 1990s, the pace of retail growth is also expected to cool. Some developers, particularly those specializing in strip, neighborhood and power centers, contend the market is overbuilt. Developers see the retail space expansion slowing in the early 1990s.
