ABSTRACT
This article provides information on a national survey of outdoor advertising regulation in the U.S., conducted by the Gallup Organization in 1990. A majority of the respondents believe regulatory power should reside with local city councils, but a substantial percentage--especially of racial minorities--said citizens are justified in using any means they can to force outdoor companies to remove boards the community deems offensive. Most people draw the line at defacing outdoor boards as a protest. But there is strong consumer support for a community's right to regulate the types of outdoor advertising allowed there.
