This article reports on an advertising program being tested by Pacific Bell Directory in a bid to attract advertisers in the U.S. to the Yellow Pages telephone directory. Pacific Bell will deliver eight to 10 product samples to 100,000 homes on the company's Yellow Pages route in November 1990 in select portions of Orange County, California, an area of affluent suburbs south of Los Angeles. The so-called Smart Samples are part of a three-pronged effort dubbed Smart Connection. The other two programs include Smart Coupons, four-color glossy coupons and Smart Ads, four-color hard-stock section dividers bound into the directory.
