The article comments on issues concerning politics in the United States. The author is concerned about the collective contempt for office-seekers and politicians. Businessmen in particular are unwilling to take the disgrace that goes with attempts to win public office, unless it is in connection with some mildly unimportant post. The elected officials are considerably above average in intelligence, education, energy, ambition, reasoning ability and plain, ordinary salesmanship. The labor force of men and women who make up the bureaucracy are supposed to carry on government's day to day activities.
