ABSTRACT
When the Democratic convention assembled in Chicago, Illinois on July 7, 1896, the party seemed not only leaderless but also divided by bitter strife. The party platform was written largely by Governor John P. Altgeld of Illinois whose pardon of the Haymarket rioters, 1893 and the handling of the Pullman strike, 1894 had made him hated by conservatives every-where.
