ABSTRACT
The article presents a comparison of the mechanism of prayer and movements within Zen Buddhism and Orthodox Hesychasm. Religious doctrines and practices which may connect the two faiths include the method of meditation or prayer for achieving enlightenment and purification, the adoption of a life of obedience, prayer, fasting and worship, and the rhythm of breathing during prayer and yoga. The similarity between Orthodox mystical theology and Buddhist transcendental meditation is discussed.
