The article presents a comparison of the teachings of American revivalist and theologian Jonathan Edwards and literary author Ralph Edward Emerson within the framework of Unitarian Universalist theological doctrines. Topics discussed include an overview of the American intellectual tradition, the notion that reason is independent of personality, and the concept of original sin. Emerson's concept of good and evil is also discussed.
