After years on the low priority, environmental awareness is returning to the forefront. Interest in legislation on electronics disposal has moved from the state to federal level and the EU and the U.S. are now talking lead-free implementation. The issue of the efficacy of measures taken for environmental protection is one of constant debate. The cost of environmental compliance may be high in hidden ways — one estimate found that, if all soldering were switched to lead free, the increased power consumption from the 27,500 reflow ovens installed worldwide would be equivalent to 1.2B kWh, the output of 60 small power plants.
