Sexual violence against children in a broad sense is defined as sexually abusive behaviour with minors. According to the U.S. centres for disease control and prevention, one out of four girls and one out of six boys experience some kind of sexual abuse before reaching adulthood. Statistical data from other Western countries indicates that almost every fifth family has experienced sexual abuse against children. In the African continent more than 30 pct. of children suffer from sexual exploitation. Sexual abuse consequences are related to various social, mental and physical health problems that can affect the individual throughout his or her lifetime. A number of studies show that the majority of victims of sexual abuse experience it from close or well known to them individuals. On the other hand, over 50 pct. of child molesters are victims of childhood sexual abuse. Therefore, in order to prevent sexual perpetration, both researchers and mental health professionals need to explore internal and external causal factors of sexual abuse, psycho-social characteristics and modus operandi of sexual offenders. The article analyzes the spectrum of sexual deviations, its relationship to sexual perpetration, the prevalence of sexual abuse, characteristics of sexual offenders and their victims as well as some abuse prevention guidelines.
