ABSTRACT
The energy efficiency is one of the most important research points for wireless sensor networks (WSNs) due to its limited energy source and requirement of long working period. A new energyefficient algorithm based on redundant nodes elimination (ERNE) is proposed in WSNs. The monitoring area is divided into grids. The sensing area of every sensor node is equivalent to total area of grids it covers. And the sensor node is considered as redundancy when these grids are covered by the neighbors of this sensor node. Then a procedure of turning off redundant sensor nodes is demonstrated, and the coverage rate can keep over 95% after shutting redundant nodes via simulation. In the end, three factors, number of on-duty nodes, number of nodes alive and data received with same energy consumption, are simulated to compare ERNE with other two existing algorithms. ERNE shows better performances than others according to the simulation results.
