Abstract
ABSTRACT
The article presents some papers related to outcomes of surgery for chronic lung disease. The study investigates the impact of the current BTS guidelines on the selection of patients for lung cancer surgery. 150 patients with potentially operable lung cancer were assessed for surgery over a two year period. Patients underwent full lung function testing, shuttle walk, and cardiopulmonary exercise test. 32 did not proceed to surgery due to upstaging on further imaging or comorbidity. Although many patients were high risk as judged by the BTS guidelines, overall mortality was lower than generally accepted. Patients with normal lung function still had a 1 % risk of death and a 19% risk of major complications.
