This article presents abstracts of several medical studies conducted to monitor mechanisms of lung injury. In one study, bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) was performed on 14 patients with Wegener's granulomatosis and 10 normals. BAL fluid (BALF) endostatin and IL-8 were measured by ELISA. BALF protein and myeloperoxidase were measured by BIORAD protein assay and chromogenic substrate assay respectively. Another study was aimed to elucidate the signalling pathways underlying the process of mRNA expression and protein release, with a view to designing pharmacotherapies to mitigate ventilator associated lung injury.

Human peritoneal mesothelial cells (HMC) play an important role in inflammatory processes by their ability to produce various cytokines and chemokines, such as monocyte chemoattractant protein 1 (MCP-1) and interleukin 8 (IL-8). In this study we investigated the effect of experimentally...

Background: Production of interferon (IFN)-γ is key to efficient anti-tumor immunity. The present study was set out to investigate effects of IFNγ on the release of the potent pro-angiogenic mediator IL-8 by human A549 lung carcinoma cells. Methods: A549 cells were cultured and stimulated...

The objective of this study was to analyze the expression levels of IL-8 in serum and liver tissues from patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) infection and to investigate whether IL-8 may antagonize interferon-alpha (IFN-a) antiviral activity against HBV. IL-8 expression in serum was...

Antineutrophil cytoplasm antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis (AAV) commonly results in glomerulonephritis, in which neutrophils and monocytes have important roles. The heterodimer calprotectin (S100A8/S100A9, mrp8/14) is a Toll-like receptor-4 ligand found in neutrophils and monocytes and is...

Circulating autoantibodies against neutrophils (ANCA) are a distinctive finding in patients with Wegener’s granulomatosis (WG). B-lymphocyte activating factor (BAFF) promotes autoantibody production by increasing B cell survival and proliferation. We investigated serum BAFF levels...

Background: Galectin-9 (Gal-9) is a β-galactoside-binding protein that induces biological reactions, such as cell activation, chemoattraction, and apoptosis. We evaluated the role of Gal-9 in the pathogenesis of interstitial pneumonia (IP). Methods: Gal-9 levels in the bronchoalveolar lavage...

Background: The chronic course of pulmonary sarcoidosis can lead to lung dysfunction due to fibrosis, in which the signalling pathways TGF-β/Smad and VEGF-A may play a key role. Methods: We evaluated immunoexpression of TGF-β1, Smad2, 3, and 7, and VEGF-A in serum and bronchoalveolar...
